DARRELL ISSA — California’s 48th Congressional District

Status: RETIRING — Announced March 6, 2026. 12 terms, 25+ years. Age 72.

The Big Beautiful Bill — What His Vote Costs California

Issa voted YES on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, then announced his retirement before his constituents could hold him accountable at the ballot box.

🚨  California faces the largest dollar-value Medicaid cuts of any state — an estimated $112 billion in combined reductions to its Medicaid budget. California has one of the nation’s highest Medicaid enrollment populations; every cut lands harder here than almost anywhere else. 1

🚨  One in four San Diegans — Issa’s own constituents — rely on Medicaid for healthcare. Rural areas in the 48th district are especially impacted. This was explained to hundreds of his constituents at a public town hall in August 2025 — which Issa did not attend. 2

🚨  11.8 million Americans will lose healthcare coverage, per the American Medical Association. Trafficking survivors and domestic violence victims with T-visas and VAWA petitions lose Medicaid under the bill Issa voted for — while he served on the Judiciary Committee overseeing the agencies meant to protect them. 3

Issa’s Constituents Noticed — He Didn’t Show Up

🚨  Issa has not held a town hall since 2017 — eight years of refusing to face his constituents. He instead hosted fundraisers outside his district. 2

🚨  August 2025: Hundreds of constituents held an empty-chair protest in his district — a neighboring congresswoman sat beside a rubber chicken effigy of Issa while explaining Medicaid cuts to the crowd. Issa did not attend. He had already voted yes on the cuts. 2

Project 2025 — Issa Built the Template

Project 2025 calls for using congressional oversight as a political weapon — relentless investigations of opponents while shielding allies. Issa pioneered that approach as Oversight Committee Chair:

🚨  Issa released selectively edited IRS transcripts to the media implying the Obama White House directed Tea Party targeting. A subsequent Republican-majority investigation found no White House involvement. Multiple news organizations confirmed the transcripts were cherry-picked. This “oversight as weapon” approach is now Project 2025’s governing model. 4 10

🚨  Issa ran a massive leadership PAC — “Invest in a Strong and Secure America” — used to build political allies outside normal campaign finance rules. He redirected his campaign website to point to this PAC before announcing retirement. 5

Trump Executive Orders — Issa’s Support Record

🚨  The bill Issa voted for directs $170 billion to immigration enforcement and strips Medicaid from refugees, asylum seekers, trafficking survivors, and domestic violence victims — all lawfully present. Issa sat on the Judiciary Committee with authority over immigration law while voting against the most vulnerable immigrants. 3

🚨  22 million American families lose SNAP food assistance. California, with one of the nation’s largest SNAP enrollments, bears a disproportionate share of those losses. Issa voted yes. 6

AIPAC — His Own Words

🚨  Issa told Jewish Insider directly: “I have a 100% pro-Israel voting record. You can call my AIPAC reps.” He co-sponsored the 2012 United States-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act and served on House Foreign Affairs for years. 7

⚠️  Issa is of Lebanese Christian descent and held measured positions on U.S. military aid to Lebanon: “Can we ensure that we’re not effectively arming Hezbollah?” — while maintaining 100% pro-Israel congressional votes. 7

 Issa served 25 years, voted to cut $112 billion from California Medicaid, held no town hall since 2017, and retired before he had to answer for any of it.

NANCY MACE — South Carolina's 1st Congressional District

Status: LEAVING CONGRESS — Running for Governor of South Carolina

Role: Three-term congresswoman (2021–2026). Under active House Ethics Committee investigation. Age 48.

Active Ethics Investigation

🚨  The Office of Congressional Conduct found "substantial reason to believe that Rep. Mace engaged in improper reimbursement practices" — she sought and was paid approximately $9,500 beyond her actual DC housing costs. The House Ethics Committee is investigating. She did not respond to the watchdog's inquiries.1

The Big Beautiful Bill — What Her Vote Costs South Carolina

Important context: South Carolina has not expanded Medicaid under the ACA, so the Medicaid work-requirement changes hit SC less directly. But the bill still causes serious documented harm:

🚨  600,000 South Carolinians rely on SNAP for food assistance. Five out of eight nursing home patients in the state are covered by Medicaid. Rep. James Clyburn — the only SC member to vote NO — called it "taking food and health care from the poorest to pay for a massive tax cut for the richest."2

🚨  27,000 SC parents will lose SNAP completely; another 69,000 will lose partial benefits. SNAP work requirements took effect in South Carolina in February 2026. Over 520,000 SC residents received SNAP in December 2025 — 48% were under 18.3

🚨  600,000 South Carolinians who purchased ACA marketplace insurance will see subsidies expire under this bill, dramatically raising their costs. Many will drop coverage they can no longer afford.4

🚨  Provider tax restrictions will strain and potentially close rural SC hospitals. SC Appleseed Center: "What we're going to see, particularly in the rural areas, are hospitals and medical providers that rely on Medicaid closing down. And that becomes a health crisis for all of us."4

Project 2025 — Mace's Legislative Record IS the Playbook

🚨  LGBTQ+ RIGHTS: Mace used the anti-trans slur "tranny" in congressional hearings, repeated it three times when challenged, harassed a cisgender woman in the Capitol bathroom, and is running for governor explicitly targeting "the radical gender agenda." This is Project 2025's LGBTQ+ elimination agenda in action.5

🚨  ABORTION: Mace co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act — which would establish a nationwide abortion ban by recognizing a fertilized egg as a person under the 14th Amendment.5

🚨  At a DOGE hearing in May 2025, Mace accused the CEO of the National Women's Law Center of "sexual grooming" without evidence, stating "That's what you all are, you're groomers." Project 2025 calls for exactly this kind of institutional attack on women's advocacy organizations.5

Trump Executive Orders — Mace's Documented Support

🚨  The bill Mace voted for strips Medicaid from refugees, asylum seekers, T-visa holders (trafficking survivors), and domestic violence victims who are lawfully present — the exact people VAWA and T-visa protections were designed to help.6

🚨  On September 12, 2025, before any suspect was arrested for a shooting, Mace stated on air without evidence: "it sounds like the shooter was a tranny or pro-tranny." This is the woman asking South Carolina to make her governor!! 5

AIPAC & Dark Money

🚨  TrackAIPAC lists Mace as AIPAC-aligned. Her HR 2374 would cut federal funding to universities that fail to suppress anti-Israel speech on campus — flagged by TrackAIPAC as AIPAC-aligned legislation.7

🚨  Rand Paul's Protect Freedom PAC began spending to support Mace's campaign — without her campaign manager's knowledge. Her manager resigned, calling her "a proxy for Rand Paul's 2028 presidential campaign." She reportedly directed a personal friend to write a seven-figure check to her campaign.8

Mace voted to take food from 27,000 SC parents and healthcare from 600,000 ACA enrollees. She is under active ethics investigation. South Carolina votes June 9, 2026.

The Big Beautiful Bill — What His Vote Costs Arizona

Biggs voted YES on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law July 4, 2025. Here is what that single vote means for the people he represented:

🚨  Up to 220,000 Arizonans on Medicaid could lose their health insurance due to new work requirements and paperwork burdens. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs: "Hospitals and health care centers will have to close. We don't have the capacity to mitigate the cuts."1

🚨  The RAND Corporation (a nonpartisan, federally funded research institution) names Arizona one of the hardest-hit states in the country — projecting more than 15% in Medicaid budget reductions. Arizona's trigger law could end Medicaid expansion entirely for adults if federal funding drops below 90%.2

🚨  200,000–300,000 Arizonans must resubmit paperwork just to keep coverage. When Arkansas imposed similar work requirements in 2018, 18,000 people lost coverage within six months with no corresponding increase in employment.3

🚨  22 million American families lose SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps) benefits nationwide. Arizona faces a $150–$200 million federal SNAP penalty risk if it cannot reduce its error rate below 6% by 2028.4

Project 2025 — Biggs Was Living It Before It Had a Name

Project 2025 is the Heritage Foundation's 900-page blueprint for dismantling the federal government. Biggs did not need to read it — he was already executing its agenda:

🚨  FREEDOM CAUCUS = P2025's enforcement arm. As Freedom Caucus Chair, Biggs perfected the exact tactics Project 2025 codifies: procedural obstruction, blocking bipartisan legislation, treating compromise as betrayal.5

🚨  Biggs is "opposed to all forms of elective abortion" and has argued for abolishing the Senate filibuster specifically to pass a nationwide abortion ban — Project 2025's exact mechanism.5

🚨  Biggs voted against all four COVID relief packages in 2020 and against the September 11 Victims Compensation Fund. Project 2025 calls for dismantling federal safety nets. Biggs has been voting that way for years.5

Trump Executive Orders — Impact on Vulnerable Arizonans

🚨  The bill Biggs voted for strips Medicaid from refugees, asylum seekers, T-visa holders (federal visas for trafficking survivors), and domestic violence VAWA petitioners (Violence Against Women Act) — people lawfully present in the U.S. following the rules.6

🚨  $170 billion for ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) enforcement — more than four times ICE's entire pre-bill annual budget — including $45 billion for new detention centers. This is the legislative arm of Trump's immigration executive orders.6

🚨  January 6th: Biggs requested a presidential pardon for crimes he may have committed trying to overturn the 2020 election. He defied the Jan. 6 Committee subpoena. He joined a Supreme Court brief calling for votes in four states to be discarded.7

Who Paid for Biggs

🚨  DARK MONEY VIOLATION (DOCUMENTED): Turning Point Action spent $459,000 on Biggs's gubernatorial campaign and was formally accused of violating Arizona's Voters' Right to Know Act by hiding donor identities. Prior FEC (Federal Election Commission) fine: $18,000 for the same pattern.8

🚨  80%+ of Biggs's congressional campaign funds came from out-of-district donors — national dark money networks, not Arizona constituents.9

⚠️  TrackAIPAC (FEC-sourced campaign finance tracker) lists Biggs under Arizona's congressional delegation with a documented pro-Israel voting record. AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) is one of the most powerful lobbying organizations in Washington. He voted for Israel military support following the 2023 Hamas attack.10

Biggs voted to strip healthcare from 220,000 Arizonans, then asked them to make him governor. Arizona votes July 21, 2026.

I am writing this for every person who has ever been told they were too sensitive, too dramatic, too much.

I am writing this for every survivor who saw the danger before anyone else did — and was dismissed for it.

I am writing this for every person watching what is happening to this country right now with a cold, sickening recognition — because they have felt this before. In their home. In their body. In the silence after the door closed.

I see you. I am you. And I am done staying quiet!!

When You Have Lived in Hell, You Know What It Looks Like

You do not need a political science degree to recognize authoritarianism. You need to have lived inside a system designed to make you doubt your own reality — and survived it.

We grew up reading rooms before we could read books. We learned to track moods, sense danger, and know what was coming before it arrived — not because we were gifted, but because we had no choice. That skill, built in the dark, is now the most important thing any of us can bring to this moment.

We are not overreacting! We are not being dramatic! We are being precise!

And I refuse to let what we know — what we paid dearly to learn — go to waste while our country burns!!!

My Credentials — The Ones That Actually Matter

•       Survivor of childhood trauma and predatory behavior. I grew up in an environment defined by violence and unpredictability. The adults around me were dangerous in ways children should never have to navigate. I learned — without knowing I was learning — how to survive. That lived experience is the foundation of everything I write. It is not a wound I carry. It is a skill I earned.

•       Survivor of a predatory relationship. A love bomber selected me deliberately — used my credit, lied about his income, put his name on my title without my knowledge, and kept private journals documenting his psychological research on how to manipulate me. I discovered all of it in a single night. I got out — quietly, step by step. I got the title back. I sold the house. A PI friend said afterward: "Lisa, I don't know how you did it — I couldn't find anything you did on him." What I found on my ex: a dating profile reading “single, never married, and I don't lie.”

•       Survivor of workplace narcissism. I navigated a narcissistic boss who felt threatened by my competence — while managing the situation at home — with the help of a therapist who looked at my fiancé in one session and said: Run!

•       Trained professional. I served as Court Operations Manager. I know how systems designed to protect people are supposed to work. I know what it looks like when they are being dismantled from the inside.

•       Researcher and writer. My work draws on Gavin de Becker, Malcolm Gladwell, James Gilligan, Ben Sherwood, Viktor Frankl, and Timothy Snyder.

•       Advocate. I published a story in support of Virginia's Law — a call to action for survivors demanding the passage of S.3815 and H.R. 7467, which would eliminate the federal statute of limitations for sex trafficking survivors. Sitting in committee right now. It will die there unless we act!

Our Country Is at Risk. Our Lives Are at Risk. Right Now!!!

This is not a political opinion. This is a documented emergency.

The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed since March 4, 2026. Twenty percent of the world's daily oil supply — gone. Gas prices surged 30%, hitting $4 per gallon on March 31. Brent crude peaked at $126 per barrel — the largest energy supply disruption since the 1970s.

And April will be worse!!!

The head of the International Energy Agency said it plainly: ships that transited before the war broke out are still arriving at ports — but that pipeline is now empty. "In April, there is nothing."  The shortages hitting Asia now are heading here. Wall Street analysts are projecting oil at $200 per barrel if the strait stays closed. Every additional month it remains closed adds $10 to $15 per barrel.

This means higher gas prices. Higher food prices. Higher prices for everything that moves, ships, or is made from petroleum — which is almost everything!

I need you to hear this: what happens when me run out?

This war was not sanctioned! It was not voted on! And it is destroying our economy and our lives!!

Survivors know this playbook. We lived it! And we are done letting it happen!!!

We Are the Same! We Demand to Be Heard!!!

To every survivor reading this: I stand with you! I am fighting for you! We are the same!!!

We lived in unpredictable homes. We walked on eggshells. We were told our perception was wrong. We carried it all — silently, skillfully, at cost!!

That ends now!! We are not going to let the people who hurt us in private destroy our country in public while we watch from the sidelines!!!

Dear friends,

 I need a few days before the next series. Not because I am stuck — but because what is coming deserves to be written right.

I promise you it will be worth the wait.

The new series will explain something I have never fully put into words before — why I have not settled for anyone since the man in the upcoming series of stories you will read.

For those of you who grew up the way I did — too early, too aware, in rooms that required you to read everything before you could feel safe — this one will be an ah-ha moment. A recognition. A name for something you have always known but never quite had the language for.

For everyone else, I suspect it will be something closer to: “holy sh*t!” That is what that is.

Read that again. Not as a political statement. As a psychological one.

This is not a gaffe. This is a confession! It is a precise description of how a person who never developed the capacity for genuine attachment relates to other human beings — not as people, but as mirrors. If you reflect back what he needs to see, you are loved. If you do not, you are an enemy.

Survivors of narcissistic relationships have heard this logic before. Not in those words. But in the dynamic. In the way warmth was conditional, loyalty was demanded, and the moment you stopped performing devotion, everything changed.

This is not leadership. This is a wound that was never healed — now with the power of the federal government behind it.

The Moment We Stop Being Polite About This

I have been careful in this series. I have cited my sources. I have been measured. I have presented the behavioral profile and let you draw your own conclusions.

I am still going to cite my sources. But I am done being measured.

What is happening right now is not a policy disagreement. It is not a difference of opinion about tax rates or the role of government. Those are debates worth having. This is not that.

What is happening right now is an attempt — documented, accelerating, and partially successful — to dismantle the systems that protect ordinary people from the abuse of power.

And the people doing it are counting on the decency of their opponents. Counting on our discomfort with being called alarmist. Counting on our faith in institutions being hollowed out in real time. Counting on the fact that we were raised to be polite, to give people the benefit of the doubt, to wait for undeniable proof before we speak.

The proof is in. And the cost of continued politeness is not borne by the polite. It is borne by the people least able to protect themselves.

The children being separated from their families. The trans teenagers being told their existence is a problem. The immigrants living in terror. The journalists being threatened. The scientists whose research is being erased.

These are not abstractions. They are people. And their safety depends, in part, on whether enough of us decide this is the moment to stop calculating the social cost of speaking clearly.

The Children Are Watching

Here is the question I come back to when the exhaustion is loudest.

What will the children who are growing up right now understand about this moment? What will they learn from watching the adults around them — about what decency requires, about what courage looks like, about whether ordinary people can make a difference when it matters most?

History does not remember the people who stayed quiet and comfortable. It does not record their names.

History remembers the people who saw clearly, spoke honestly, and acted while there was still time.

We are in that time. Right now!!!

Your voice — imperfect, uncertain, sometimes tired, occasionally furious — is exactly the voice this moment needs!

Not later! Not when you feel more ready. Not when someone gives you permission.

Now!

We have seen this story before. We know how it ends when people stay silent.

Let us write a different ending.

What Your Silence Is Actually Saying

One of my readers left a comment on Part Two of the Silence Is Complicity series that stopped me: "Reminiscent of 'First They Came' — the poem by Martin Niemöller."

Niemöller was a German pastor who initially supported Hitler's rise, then spent seven years in concentration camps. After the war, he wrote the words that became one of the most cited poems in the history of political conscience.

First, they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.  — Martin Niemöller

Niemöller's point was not that he was a coward. His point was that silence feels like safety — and that this feeling is a lie.

Every time you see something clearly and do not name it, you are casting a vote. Not for a party. For a version of reality in which what is happening is acceptable.

Silence is not neutral. It is an active force. It is the oxygen that keeps the fire going.

They Are Counting on Your Exhaustion

You are tired. The outrage cycle is designed to exhaust you. Flooding the zone with crisis after crisis is a documented strategy for disabling organized resistance. If people are always reacting, they cannot plan. If they are always overwhelmed, they cannot act.

Ben Sherwood's research on survivors found that the people who made it through catastrophic situations were almost always the ones who did not try to do everything. They did one thing. Consistently. With intention.

Here is what I am asking — calibrated to whatever you have:

•       Five minutes: Share this post. One share plants a seed in someone who might not otherwise find these words.

•       Thirty minutes: Write one honest thing on social media this week. Not a repost. Your own words. What you are seeing. What you know.

•       An hour: Call your representatives. Write a letter to your local paper. Have the conversation with the one person in your life still not seeing clearly — not to win, but to plant a seed.

•       More: Organize. Connect. Show up. Collective, visible, persistent presence is the one thing that authoritarian systems consistently cannot absorb.

Why Some of Us See Clearly — And Why Blink Explains It

Malcolm Gladwell's Blink introduced most readers to the idea of "thin-slicing" — the brain's ability to make accurate, rapid assessments from very small amounts of information. Experts do it. Experienced professionals do it. And people who grew up in unpredictable, dangerous environments do it with a precision that can feel almost supernatural.

When a child grows up in an environment where safety is inconsistent — where the person who is supposed to protect them is also the source of danger — the brain rewires itself around one central task: read the room before the room reads you. Every micro-expression. Every shift in tone. Every footstep on the stairs. Every silence that feels different from yesterday's silence.

The nervous system of a child in that environment becomes, over years, one of the most sophisticated threat-detection systems that human biology can produce. Not because of talent. Because of survival.

Gavin de Becker documented this throughout his career. The people who most reliably sense danger before it fully materializes are almost always the people who had the most practice doing it young. What looks like intuition is actually pattern recognition operating at speeds that conscious thought cannot match.

Gladwell called this the "adaptive unconscious." Trauma researchers call it hypervigilance. Survivors call it: I just knew.

You just knew because you were trained to know. Because your life once depended on knowing.

When you watched a leader who never accepted accountability, who always had someone else to blame, who demanded loyalty while giving none, who performed cruelty as strength — your nervous system did not need a political science degree to process that signal.

It had seen that face before.

You were not being paranoid. You were being precise.

What We Are Actually Looking At Right Now

Let us name it clearly. Not with rage — rage can be dismissed. With the calm, documented precision that a trauma-informed clinician would use.

Dismantling oversight. Courts, inspectors general, independent agencies, the free press — every institution whose job is to say no or wait or show your work is under sustained attack. This is not policy disagreement. It is the systematic removal of witnesses.

Manufacturing enemies. Immigrants. Academics. Journalists. Judges. Trans children. The list shifts, but the function is constant: there must always be a group whose suffering can be offered as proof of strength. James Gilligan's decades of research found this pattern at every scale — from individual abusers to authoritarian states. The enemy is chosen not for what they have done, but for what their suffering accomplishes for them!

Rewarding loyalty, punishing truth. Every person who told an uncomfortable truth has been humiliated or destroyed. Every person who performed unquestioning devotion has been elevated. This is not management style. It is a closed system designed to ensure the leader never has to hear the word no.

Gaslighting at national scale. When what you see contradicts what you are told you are seeing — when your own memory is called a lie — that is not spin. That is abuse. It is the same tool used by every abuser who has ever told a partner: "That never happened. You are imagining it."

This is not politics. This is a recognizable pattern of behavior. And it is accelerating.

This Is Not One Executive Order. This Is Not One Bad Bill. This Is a System — and the 2026 Midterms Are the Target.

On March 31, 2026, President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the federal government to build a national list of "verified" eligible voters and to block the U.S. Postal Service from mailing absentee ballots to anyone not on that list. But that executive order is just one piece of a much larger, coordinated assault on your right to vote before November 2026. There are five separate fronts in this fight, and every American needs to understand all of them.

Threat #1 — The National Voter List Executive Order

The order calls on the Department of Homeland Security, working with the Social Security Administration, to compile a state-by-state list of eligible voters. It also seeks to bar the U.S. Postal Service from sending absentee ballots to anyone not on that federal list.

Most alarming: the order directs the Attorney General to prioritize the investigation and prosecution of election officials who issue ballots to anyone deemed ineligible. Election officials who try to protect your right to vote could face criminal prosecution for doing their jobs.

"We don't need decrees from Washington, D.C. My message to the President: We'll see you in court." — Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read

Voting law experts have called the order unconstitutional, stating it illegally strips states of their right to manage elections. UCLA election law expert Rick Hasen wrote that even if the order were not blocked by courts, it could not realistically be implemented before the 2026 elections. So why do it? Because the disruption and confusion it creates between now and November is the weapon.

Threat #2 — The SAVE America Act: Already Passed the House

On February 11, 2026, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the SAVE America Act by a vote of 218–213. The bill requires American citizens to show documents such as a birth certificate or passport in order to register to vote in federal elections.

Who Gets Left Out?

•       More than 21 million Americans lack ready access to a passport or birth certificate.

•       Roughly half of all Americans do not have a current passport.

•       An estimated 70 million married people have a last name that no longer matches their birth certificate.

•       Younger voters, voters of color, low-income voters, and Native American voters on reservations face disproportionate impact.

•       Every address change or party update would require re-presenting those documents.

Where Does It Stand?

The bill is currently stalled in the Senate behind a Democratic filibuster, which requires 60 votes to overcome. Republicans hold only a 53-seat majority. Trump has publicly urged Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster to force the bill through with a simple majority. He told House Republicans directly: "It will guarantee the midterms. If you don't get it, big trouble."

Is There Any Actual Fraud Justifying This?

No. The Heritage Foundation — which actively advocates for the SAVE Act — found that since the 1980s, out of over one billion ballots cast, there are only 68 documented instances of noncitizens voting. States including Louisiana and Utah that have conducted full voter roll reviews have confirmed the same conclusion. This was never about fraud. It was always about control.

Threat #3 — The MEGA Act: The Even More Extreme Version

Introduced in the House in January 2026, the Make Elections Great Again Act contains everything in the SAVE America Act — plus a sweeping ban on universal mail voting and a ban on ranked choice voting. It would require voters to actively request a mail ballot before every single election and would prohibit anyone from helping a community member return their mail ballot, disproportionately harming voters of color, elderly voters, low-income voters, and Native American voters on reservations.

Threat #4 — Federal Agents at Your Polling Place

The Department of Homeland Security has refused to rule out deploying federal agents to polling places. Trump ally Steve Bannon explicitly called for ICE's airport deployments to serve as a "test case" to "perfect ICE's involvement in the 2026 midterm elections." Senator Amy Klobuchar said plainly: "They're trying to scare people so they don't want to vote."

Is It Even Legal?

Federal law explicitly prohibits deploying troops or armed federal law enforcement to any polling place. It is a federal crime for anyone — including federal agents — to intimidate voters. States are not waiting for the federal government to act. New Mexico passed a law making it a felony for armed federal agents to appear at polling places. At least eight additional states have introduced or passed similar legislation.

Threat #5 — Targeting the Machinery of Elections Itself

Federal law enforcement has already conducted actions against election offices in Fulton County, Georgia; Maricopa County, Arizona; and Puerto Rico. National Guard units have been deployed to Democratic-leaning cities. Election law experts have raised the prospect of the FBI obtaining warrants to seize ballots in a race not yet called — a scenario with no clear legal precedent.

What You Must Do Before November 2026

•       ✅ Verify your voter registration immediately at vote.org or your state's official election website.

•       ✅ Know your state's current ID and mail ballot rules — several have already changed under federal pressure.

•       ✅ Vote in person if you are able. Mail voting is under attack from multiple directions.

•       ✅ Contact both of your U.S. Senators. The SAVE America Act must be stopped in the Senate. Call. Write. Show up.

•       ✅ Do not be intimidated. Federal agents at a polling place is illegal. Call 1-866-OUR-VOTE to report it.

•       ✅ Support the organizations fighting in court — the Brennan Center, Democracy Docket, and your state's ACLU are mobilizing now.

•       ✅ Share this article. The Americans most at risk are often the least likely to hear about this in time.

The Bottom Line

The right to vote is the foundation of everything else. Without a free and fair vote, no other right is secure. What is happening right now — the executive orders, the legislation, the threatened deployments, the seizure of election records — is a coordinated, layered effort to determine in advance who gets a voice in November 2026.

The people behind these efforts are counting on you not knowing. They are counting on you being too busy, too tired, or too discouraged to fight back. Prove them wrong.

Your vote is your voice. And there are people working right now — every single day — to take it from you before you ever set foot in a polling place. Do not let them.

I am going to say something that I need you to sit with before you decide how you feel about it.

Some of us can see what is happening right now with a clarity that others cannot access. Not because we are smarter. Not because we are more political. But because of what we have already survived. And if you are one of those people — if you have been watching this unfold with a sickening sense of recognition, if you have been saying I have seen this before while the people around you said you are overreacting — then this piece is for you.

Your clarity is not a curse. It is a gift the moment desperately needs. And it is time to use it.

The Slow Boil

There is a reason people do not notice they are in danger until it is too late. It is not stupidity. It is biology.

The human brain measures threat by comparing today to yesterday. Not to two years ago. Not to what the history books warned us about. Just: is today noticeably worse than yesterday? If the answer is no — or only a little — the brain files it as safe and moves on.

This is how every abuser operates. Slowly. Incrementally. One small violation at a time, each one just barely inside the range of what the target has already accepted. By the time the danger is undeniable, the baseline has shifted so far that the person can no longer remember what normal felt like.

It is also exactly how authoritarianism takes hold.

Think about what was unthinkable five years ago and is now a Tuesday. The firing of inspectors general. The weaponization of federal agencies against political opponents. The open mockery of the press. The dismantling of oversight, one institution at a time. The loyalty tests. The enemies list. The cruelty performed for applause.

Each step was just one step. That is the point. That is the strategy.

And for people who have never lived inside a system designed to gradually destroy their sense of reality — it is almost impossible to see until the water is already boiling.

Almost.

But some of us learned to see before the water boiled. In Part 2, we talk about why — and what that means for right now.

In Part One, we learned to see. In Part Two, we understood why the mirror moment will never arrive for them.

Now we talk about what we do instead — because we are not just targets of a political agenda.

We are targets of a psychology. And knowing that is not despair. It is the beginning of an honest defense.

What This Means Right Now

We are being governed, in part, by people whose actions — not their words — display this profile with consistency and clarity.

The attacks on oversight. The punishment of dissent. The manufactured enemies. The pathological need for praise. The pattern of using people and discarding them. The refusal to ever accept blame. The cruelty toward the vulnerable, dressed up as strength.

Power does not create these patterns. It reveals them. It amplifies them. It removes the last consequences that kept them in check.

They will not have the mirror moment. We know why. So, we stop waiting for it. We accept what the evidence has been telling us — clearly, consistently, for a very long time — and we act on what we see.

We Have Seen This Story Before

History is not a warning we receive. It is a warning we are given — and must choose to hear.

In the early 1930s, ordinary people watched a charismatic, deeply wounded man dismantle democratic norms one by one — attacking the press, purging the courts, inventing enemies, demanding loyalty, moving so fast that no outrage could be absorbed before the next arrived. Respectable people told themselves they could manage him. By the time the majority understood what was happening, the mechanisms that might have stopped it were already gone.

Mussolini's Italy followed the same arc. So did Hungary under Orbán — a modern, living example of how a democracy can be legally hollowed out while its citizens hoped it was not really happening.

These are not distant cautionary tales. They are documented, studied, and eerily consistent with what we are watching now.

Historian Timothy Snyder, in On Tyranny, drew twenty lessons from the collapse of twentieth-century democracies. His first is the one that matters most right now:

Do not obey in advance. Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. — Timothy Snyder, On Tyranny

The people history remembers with gratitude were not the ones who waited for someone else to act. They named what they saw, maintained their connections, refused to normalize the abnormal, and protected the institutions and relationships within their reach.

They changed the story because they refused to pretend it was not being written.

The Ending Is Not Yet Fixed

We are not at the end of this story. We are somewhere in the middle — which means the outcome is still ours to shape.

Watch what they do. Name what you see. Stay connected to people you trust. Protect the institutions that protect all of us. Do not wait to be asked.

The difference between the two paths ahead is not fate. It is not luck.

It is whether enough of us choose to see clearly, speak honestly, and act while there is still time.

We have seen this story before. We know how it ends when people stay silent.

Let us write a different ending.

In Part One, we learned to watch actions instead of words — and we ended with the question that changes everything: what are the real odds someone this damaged can change?

The answer is not the one most of us want to hear. But it is the one we need.

Can They Change?

The research on people with deep narcissistic or sociopathic wounds — formed in childhood when no safe attachment is ever built — is unambiguous: change is possible, but it is rare. And it requires three things almost never present in people who have reached unchecked power:

First, genuine consequences. Not managed or deflected — pain that lands and cannot be explained away.

Second, insight — the ability to look inward honestly. People whose entire psychology is built around protecting the self from shame are almost by definition unable to access this without extraordinary intervention.

Third — and most important — the desire to change. Not to appear better. Not to stop the accusations. But to genuinely encounter themselves in the mirror and be disturbed by what they see.

For someone who has spent a lifetime surrounded only by people who reflect back a version of themselves they can tolerate, that moment may never come. That is not a political statement. It is a clinical one.

A Therapist's Answer

I once asked a therapist why a significant person in my life would never — not once — accept responsibility for what had happened. No apology. Denial that never cracked, even when the evidence was undeniable.

Her answer stopped me cold.

Because admitting that would mean admitting they were a monster.

Think about how many people you know who could honestly say: I allowed something terrible to happen. What I did — or failed to do — was monstrous. How many people have that depth of honest self-reckoning?

Now ask how much harder that admission is when the person has never developed the psychological tools for accountability. When every defense mechanism they possess was built precisely to prevent that moment from ever arriving.

This is why the parent who failed their child never says sorry. Why the abuser always has an explanation. Why the person in power, insulated by enablers, will never hold the mirror up.

The admission would destroy the only version of themselves they can survive being.

The denial is not a choice. It is a psychological necessity — the last wall between who they are and what they would have to become to truly face it.

How Denial Put Us Here

Here is the part that implicates not just them, but us. We are in this situation, in part, because millions of people chose hope over evidence. Not out of stupidity — out of a human need to believe that charm means kindness, and that someone so magnetic could not also be so destructive.

We wanted to believe the words. We did not watch the actions.

Some of us did know. We named it and were called alarmist. That is how denial works at scale — not just the damaged person refusing to see themselves, but an entire culture refusing to believe someone could be that broken and that determined to acquire power.

Viktor Frankl, who survived the unsurvivable, warned that the most dangerous prisoners in the camps were the eternal optimists — the ones saying it will be better by spring. Hope untethered from reality becomes its own kind of prison.

Ben Sherwood's survivor research confirms the flip side: the people who make it through catastrophe are almost always the ones who accepted reality first — before others were ready to.

Hope that refuses to see clearly is not hope. It is avoidance. And avoidance, at this scale, has consequences for all of us.

Part One: Learning to See

Two truths. Both necessary. Both hard to hold at once.

The first: we must have hope. It is the engine of survival; the reason people fight for something better.

The second: some people do not change. Not without help they will never seek. Not without a moment — early in life — when someone safe showed them what love without conditions looks like.

What happens when a person shaped by cruelty, neglect, and the worship of power is placed at the highest level of power in the world?

We will get to that answer. First, we need to learn how to see.

We Are Always a Target

Children who grow up in environments of abuse or chaos develop nervous systems calibrated for danger. They learn that vulnerability is weakness. That power is the only real safety. That the world is zero-sum — you either take or are taken from.

Most survivors of those environments eventually found one person — a teacher, a grandparent, a neighbor — whose consistent, safe presence interrupted the pattern and rewired enough of the damage to imagine another way.

But what about the child who found no such person? That child grows into an adult whose damage is structural — living in the nervous system, expressing itself as an insatiable need for control, admiration, and the elimination of anyone perceived as a threat. According to researchers like James Gilligan, that adult does not simply decide one day to become different.

We are always a target — not because we did something wrong, but because people shaped by that wound need targets. They need an enemy to sustain the internal story that justifies who they are.

This is not a metaphor. It is a mechanism. Once you understand it, you cannot unsee it.

Watch What They Do

Gavin de Becker spent his career teaching one lesson: stop listening to what dangerous people say and start watching what they do. The charm is real. The warmth can be genuine. But it is a survival skill — honed over a lifetime of needing to manage others before they can cause harm.

Watch what they actually do:

• Do they respect any limit, any law, any boundary — or do all rules bend for them?

• Do they accept accountability — or is someone else always to blame?

• Do they treat people as human beings — or as instruments and obstacles?

• Do they build others up — or does everyone around them eventually diminish?

• Do they protect the vulnerable — or prey on vulnerability itself?

 These are behavioral questions, not political ones. And the answers, when you watch rather than listen, are almost never ambiguous.

Most people who finally allow themselves to look clearly realize they already knew. The gut had been signaling. The evidence had been accumulating. What was missing was not information.

What was missing was permission. You have it now.

The Question That Keeps People Up at Night

Seeing clearly is only the beginning. The harder question — the one this series is really about — is what you do when what you see is someone who may be beyond reach. Someone who has been showing the world exactly who they are for years while the world kept looking away.

What are the real odds someone this damaged can change? What would it take? And what happens to the rest of us while we wait to find out?

Those answers are not comfortable. But they are necessary. And they are where we go in Part Two.

FIRST, UNDERSTAND HOW WE GOT HERE

Before you can make sense of the 2026 California governor's race, you need to understand one Supreme Court decision: Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, decided 5–4 in January 2010.

In a single ruling, the Court's conservative majority struck down over a century of campaign finance law and declared that corporations, billionaires, and outside groups have a First Amendment right to spend unlimited money on elections — as long as they don't formally 'coordinate' with a candidate. This created a new legal vehicle called the super PAC — a committee that can raise and spend infinite amounts from any source, including corporations, dark money nonprofits, and individual billionaires.

"A democracy cannot function effectively when its constituent members believe laws are being bought and sold." — Justice John Paul Stevens, dissenting in Citizens United, 2010

The numbers tell the story. Since Citizens United, outside spending has exploded more than 28-fold. In the 2024 election alone, just 100 billionaire donors poured a record $2.6 billion into federal races — nearly 20% of all spending. A single billionaire, Elon Musk, contributed over $290 million to outside-spending groups, roughly equivalent to the combined small-dollar donations of 3 million ordinary Americans. Over 80% of total billionaire election spending in 2024 went through channels that were illegal before Citizens United. The result, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit, is that the United States is now classified as a "flawed democracy" rather than a full one. Public trust in government has hit record lows. And 80% of Americans, according to Pew Research, believe wealthy donors have too much influence over elected officials.

What Citizens United unleashed is not a hypothetical threat. It is the water you are swimming in right now — and the California governor's race is one of its most visible current expressions.

THE RACE — AND WHY NOBODY IS WHO THEY APPEAR TO BE

California is choosing its next governor in a top-two primary on June 2, 2026. Ten candidates — eight Democrats and two Republicans — are on the ballot. The two with the most votes go to November, regardless of party. With a fragmented Democratic field and two consolidated Republicans, there is a real 27% statistical chance that both November finalists will be Republicans — for the first time in modern California history.

Steve Hilton — The Fox News Candidate With a Super PAC Problem

Steve Hilton is a British-born, former Fox News host who served as political strategist to UK Prime Minister David Cameron. He moved to California in 2012 and calls his campaign 'nonpartisan.' He is running as a Republican. After Trump lost in 2020, Hilton demanded a fraud investigation on-air — clips Trump retweeted. He is backed by Rupert Murdoch, owner of Fox Corporation. His campaign has attracted over 30,000 donors and raised $4.1 million — and critically, also received $39,200 from Google co-founder Sergey Brin, who simultaneously gave $78,400 to Democrat Matt Mahan and $20 million to a ballot measure committee. Brin left California for Nevada. He is hedging his bets across the entire field.

Hilton's policy platform — end sanctuary protections, full ICE cooperation, gut climate regulations, eliminate income taxes without explaining what gets cut — is a standard MAGA agenda dressed in the language of affordability. His answer to California's budget is a whistleblower website called califraud.com. He is asking you to hand the world's fifth-largest economy to a Fox News contributor bankrolled by Rupert Murdoch.

Chad Bianco — The Sheriff Who Investigates His Own Elections

Chad Bianco, Sheriff of Riverside County, endorsed Trump in 2024 with the words: "It's time we put a felon in the White House." He was a dues-paying member of the Oath Keepers — the anti-government militia whose leader was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison for seditious conspiracy in the January 6th insurrection. Under his watch, Riverside County recorded California's lowest crime clearance rate — solving just 9.2% of reported crimes — while violent crime rose 18%. A deputy was caught smuggling 104 pounds of fentanyl. His jails logged the most in-custody deaths in 15 years, triggering a California AG civil rights investigation that remains open.

This week, Bianco physically seized 650,000 ballots from Riverside County election officials, claiming fraud in the November 2025 Prop. 50 election. The state Attorney General called it 'unprecedented' and 'designed to sow distrust.' The Secretary of State called the claims 'unsubstantiated.' Bianco is running for governor while investigating an election in his own county — as a candidate appearing on that very ballot. He also created a secretive campaign legal defense fund — the only major gubernatorial candidate to do so — without disclosing its purpose.

Matt Mahan — The Democrat Funded by Thiel's Network

And then there is Democrat Matt Mahan, San Jose's mayor, who entered the race in January 2026. His California Back to Basics super PAC spent $1.5 million on a Super Bowl ad within weeks of his launch and has raised $3.2 million — legally barred from 'coordinating' with his campaign, yet funded by many of the same billionaires writing checks directly to him. More than 25 billionaires have backed Mahan with a combined $8.6 million, including Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, Peter Thiel's Founders Fund network, and investors in Anduril — the defense tech company that builds autonomous weapons systems and benefits from government contracts. His campaign manager was a registered Republican as recently as 2020. He opposes the proposed California billionaire's tax — a policy that would directly affect his own donors. He polls at 4%.

This is Citizens United in real time: a super PAC, an anonymous 501(c)(4), billionaire networks funding both the Republican and the 'moderate' Democrat — all perfectly legal, all designed to ensure that whoever wins, the billionaires' calls get answered first.

WHY THE JUNE 2 PRIMARY IS THE REAL ELECTION

California uses a top-two primary. Every voter — Democrat, Republican, Independent — votes on one ballot on June 2. The two candidates with the most votes advance to November, regardless of party. Statistical modeling shows a 27% chance that both November finalists will be Republicans if Democrats keep splitting votes eight ways. California hasn't had a Republican governor since 2011, or elected a Republican to statewide office since 2006.

The June 2 primary is not a formality. It is the election. Voting in November without voting in June is like showing up to a championship game that was decided in the semifinals.

WHAT YOU CAN DO — THREE QUESTIONS FOR EVERY CANDIDATE

The information is public. Before you vote, ask these questions about every name on your ballot:

• Who funded them — and through what vehicle? Check direct donations at Cal-Access and super PAC spending at TransparencyUSA. If a super PAC is running ads for your candidate, ask who funds it — and whether any of that money flows through a 501(c)(4) 'dark money' nonprofit that doesn't have to disclose its donors. Remember: the donor doesn't give because they believe. They give because they expect.

• What have they actually done? Not what they promise. A sheriff with the state's worst crime clearance rate is not a law-and-order candidate. A mayor who diverts voter-approved housing funds away from permanent homes is not a housing champion. A Fox News host who promoted election fraud claims in 2020 is not a nonpartisan reformer.

• Who do their policies actually help? When someone vows to cut taxes without explaining what gets cut, ask who benefits. When someone promises to end sanctuary protections, ask which communities bear the cost. When someone promises to 'take a nuclear bomb' to Sacramento, ask what gets destroyed alongside the dysfunction.

Research shows that voters are less likely to support candidates once they learn those candidates are funded by super PACs or dark money — and that candidates who make their opponent's billionaire funding a public issue can win even as underdogs. The power to expose this is yours. So is the power to use it.

California is not broken beyond repair. But it can be broken by the wrong governor — one who governs for the people who funded their campaign, not the people who cast their votes. You have until June 2! Start now!

The Platforms Parents Need to Know About

Chat and Messaging Apps

Discord, Kik Messenger, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Ask.fm, Yubo, and Omegle-type sites all allow anonymous or semi-anonymous contact with strangers. Several use end-to-end encryption that leaves no readable history. Predators use these platforms to build relationships with children before moving them to more private spaces.

Online Games

Gaming is now one of the primary access points for predators. Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft, Call of Duty, and any game with voice chat or direct messaging connects children with unknown adults instantly. Watch for your child receiving unexplained in-game gifts or currency, talking about a new online “friend” they have never met in person, or insisting on playing alone with headphones in a private room.

The AI Threat

AI has become the newest tool in the exploitation playbook. Offenders are now generating fake sexual images of real children using public social media photos as source material. This means a child does not have to share anything for their image to be exploited — a single public photo is enough. Set all your child’s accounts to private immediately and review every platform they use.

Bark — scans 30+ apps and platforms using AI to detect threats and sends parent alerts rather than full surveillance, balancing safety with trust.

Net Nanny — tracks location, blocks apps, and screens content within social media apps including Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

How to Search for Hidden and Vault Apps — Step by Step

One of the most important practical skills a parent can have right now is knowing how to find apps your child does not want you to see.

What Are Vault Apps?

Vault apps — also called ghost, secret, or hide apps — are designed to conceal photos, messages, contact lists, and browsing history behind an innocent-looking interface. Many look exactly like a calculator or a note-taking app. Entering a specific code unlocks the hidden compartment inside.

The most important thing to look for: two of the same app. If you see two calculator apps on your child’s phone, one of them is almost certainly a vault. Common vault apps to search for by name include: AppLock, Vault, Vaulty, SpyCalc, Hide It Pro, CoverMe, Secret Photo Vault, Calculator Photo Vault, Calculator+, Keepsafe Calculator Vault, and Best Secret Folder.

One critical recent development: A recent Apple update automatically downloaded an app called Journal — even for young users, without parental consent — which functions as a vault app behind Face ID or password protection. Google’s Android 15 introduced Private Space, a locked and hidden profile where apps can be installed invisibly. Check for both on your child’s device.

On iPhone (iOS) — Step by Step

App Store Search: Open the App Store and search for “vault app,” “hide photos,” or “secret app.” If any results show “OPEN” instead of “GET,” the app is already installed.

App Library: Tap the App Library search bar and type any app name. Apps not visible on the home screen will still appear here.

Hidden Purchases: In the App Store, tap your name, scroll down, and tap Hidden Purchases to see every app that has been deliberately hidden.

Storage Check: Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage — this lists every app installed, even hidden ones.

Spotlight Search: Swipe down from the home screen and type any app name. Hidden apps appear here.

Screen Time: Go to Settings → Screen Time → App Activity to see every app used and for how long, including apps you do not recognize.

On Android — Step by Step

App Drawer: Open the app drawer, tap the three-dot menu, and look for “Hide apps” to reveal what has been concealed.

Settings: Go to Settings → Apps → See all apps for a complete list of every installed app.

Check for App Hiders: Look for apps specifically designed to hide other apps, such as App Hider or Nova Launcher.

Secure Folder (Samsung): Go to Settings → Biometrics and Security → Secure Folder and check what is stored inside.

Google Play Store: Open the Play Store, tap the profile icon, then Manage Apps & Device → Manage to see every app ever installed.

On a Computer — Windows & Mac

Windows: Check Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Delete) → Processes for every program running. Look in C:\Users\[child’s name]\AppData for hidden installs. Review browser history in every browser and look for incognito or private browsing use. Use Microsoft Family Safety for full monitoring.

Mac: Check the Applications folder for unfamiliar programs. Go to System Preferences → Screen Time for a full activity report. Check Safari History and look for additional browsers, particularly Tor. Use Activity Monitor to see all running processes.

Built-In Parental Controls

iPhone — Screen Time & Family Sharing

Go to Settings → Screen Time to set app limits, require approval for all downloads, and view full usage reports. Turn on Family Sharing with Ask to Buy so no app can be installed without your approval.

Android — Google Family Link

Google Family Link lets parents approve or block which apps can be downloaded, see how much time kids spend on each app, set screen time limits, and remotely lock the device. Available free for Android users.

Before You Look at the Phone — Talk First

This is the most important section in this entire series. Before you check a single app or install a single monitoring tool, have a conversation with your child. How you approach it will determine whether your child sees you as an ally or an adversary — and that distinction could one day save their life.

The goal is simple: you are not checking because you do not trust them. You are checking because you do not trust everyone else.

For Younger Children (Under 11)

Keep it warm and matter-of-fact. You do not need to frighten them with details. Try something like:

“Just like I want to know where you are when you go outside to play, I also want to know where you go online. The internet is a big place, and not everyone there is kind or honest. I am going to check your phone sometimes — not because you are in trouble or because I do not trust you, but because it is my job to keep you safe. That is what parents do.”

For Tweens (11–13)

Establish boundaries early and make it a conversation, not a lecture. Try:

“I know you are growing up and that you value your privacy — and I respect that. But there are people online who are not who they say they are, and even the most careful, smart kids can be targeted. I am not looking for reasons to punish you. I am looking out for your safety. We are on the same team.”

For Teens (14–17)

Be direct, honest, and respectful. Try:

“I want to make sure you are safe online, just like I want to know where you are when you go out with friends. This is not about distrust. It is about the world we are living in right now — and I would rather have an uncomfortable conversation with you than lose you to someone who had no business being in your life.”

Rules for Every Conversation at Every Age

Use age-appropriate language and focus on empowerment rather than fear. Make it an ongoing conversation, not a one-time lecture.

Be upfront that you will be doing check-ins. No hidden surveillance, no surprises. Honesty builds the very trust you need your child to have in you.

Make it absolutely clear: if something happens online, they will not be in trouble for telling you. That promise may be the most important one you ever make.

Ask open questions regularly: “What is the coolest thing you saw online today?” or “Has anyone ever sent you something that made you feel weird or uncomfortable?” These low-pressure questions keep the door open.

What Children Need to Know — Signs to Watch for in People Who May Want to Harm Them

Children are not helpless. They can be taught to recognize warning signs — not to make them afraid of the world, but to give them the language and the confidence to say something feels wrong here, and to know that saying it out loud is always the right choice.

As I described in Watch What They Do and We Are Always A Target, predators follow patterns. Teach your children to recognize these eight warning signs:

1. They Give You Too Much Attention, Too Fast

A safe adult does not need to shower a child with constant compliments, daily messages, or excessive praise. Phrases like “you are so mature for your age” or “no one understands you the way I do” are warning signs, not compliments. Teach your child: real friendship builds slowly. Anyone who rushes it wants something.

2. They Give Gifts for No Reason

Unexpected gifts — especially from someone they met online — are a major red flag. This includes digital currency, gaming skins, gift cards, clothing, or electronics. Watch for extra Robux or V-Bucks appearing in gaming accounts your child cannot explain. Teach your child: gifts from people you barely know always come with strings attached.

3. They Ask You to Keep Secrets

This is one of the clearest warning signs of all. A predator depends on secrecy to survive. Teach your child this clearly and repeatedly: a safe adult will never, ever ask you to keep a secret from your parents. If someone asks them to hide a conversation, delete messages, or move to a private app, that is not protection — that is a trap.

4. They Try to Be Alone With You

Whether online or in person, watch for adults who consistently try to create one-on-one situations — private messages, separate chat rooms, special trips, or offers to drive them home. Teach your child: a safe adult is comfortable having other trusted people around.

5. They Push Boundaries Slowly

Grooming does not happen all at once. It starts small — an inappropriate joke, a comment about their body, a slightly too-personal question — and slowly escalates. Each step is a test. Teach your child: if something makes you feel uncomfortable — even a little — you are allowed to say so, and you are allowed to tell me.

6. They Try to Pull You Away From Your Family and Friends

A predator usually needs isolation to operate. Watch for anyone who tells your child their parents do not understand them or that the predator is the only one who truly cares. Teach your child: anyone who tries to separate you from the people who love you does not have your best interests at heart.

7. They Send or Ask for Photos

This is a criminal act. Teach your child clearly: no adult should ever send them sexual images or ask them to send any images of their body — ever. And if it happens, they are not in trouble. The adult is. Tell them immediately.

8. They Move the Conversation to a Private or Encrypted App

Predators know which apps parents cannot monitor. The moment someone tries to move a conversation from a public platform to a private one — especially with urgency or secrecy — that is a red flag. Teach your child to never follow anyone to a private space online without a parent’s knowledge.

Behavioral Warning Signs in Your Child

Before you look at a single device, look at your child first. Warning signs that something may be wrong include:

Becoming secretive or withdrawn, especially after being online. Switching screens or closing the device quickly when you walk by. Becoming unusually upset when device access is restricted. Receiving calls, texts, or gifts from people you do not know. Using devices late at night or insisting on privacy in a closed room. Suddenly using sexually explicit vocabulary or demonstrating knowledge beyond their age. Withdrawing from family and longtime friends.

Additional clinical warning signs include: increased anxiety, depression, or withdrawal. Changes in sleep patterns. Loss of interest in activities they once loved. Aggression, defiance, or unusual emotional outbursts. Regressive behaviors in younger children.

On the device itself: unexplained battery drain, increased data usage, apps buried in folders or hidden from the home screen. The child becoming overly protective of their phone. Frequent locking of the device when you are nearby or ask to look at it.

Why I Am Qualified to Tell You This — And Why I Wish I Were Not

I did not come to this topic through research alone. I came to it through thirty years of witnessing what happens when children are not protected — and through my own lived experience as a survivor.

For approximately twenty years, I worked as an Administrator and Court Operations Manager in the Juvenile Justice System. During that time, I was deeply involved in child welfare and abuse committees, worked alongside multiple government agencies dedicated to protecting children, and oversaw specialized courtrooms designed specifically to help kids who had become caught up in the system — through no fault of their own. I sat in rooms where the statistics were not numbers. They were children. Children with names and faces and stories that I carry with me still.

In the Criminal Justice System, I worked my way up through the ranks — processing new criminal filings, serving the public at our court counters both in person and by telephone, witnessing and assisting criminal trials, and eventually working as a Judicial Assistant and Courtroom Clerk in high-volume criminal courtrooms for ten years. I processed cases involving the full spectrum of human harm — including crimes against children. I saw what predators look like before and when they are finally held accountable. And I also saw, far too often, how long it had taken for anyone to notice. And those were just the ones who were caught!

It was through both my lived experience as a survivor and my years of direct professional observation that I came to recognize the patterns and behaviors of those who harm others. You see them in the files before you even see them in a courtroom. You recognize the language, the excuses, the cycle. And once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

There is something else I have never spoken about publicly until now. During my time processing criminal filings, a case came across my desk that stopped me cold. My eyes latched onto a name on the complaint — and it was my brother’s. He had not come home, and I had been wondering where he was. In that moment, the professional and the personal collided in a way I will never forget. My brother had been caught up in both systems. I processed his file with my own hands.

And then there is “The Actor.” He should have been in the system long before anyone noticed him. The abuse he inflicted should have brought him before a court, before a judge, before consequences. But the only crime he was ever caught for — the only time the system ever touched him — was a DUI. That is how it works, far more often than anyone wants to admit. The harm that happens behind closed doors, to children who cannot speak up or are not believed — that harm is invisible to the system until it is too late.

I am telling you all of this because what I am about to share across this four-part series is not theoretical. It is not alarmist. It is what I know to be true from over three decades of professional experience, personal observation, and a lifetime of survival.

The threat to our children is real, it is escalating, and it is happening right now — in and outside your home, on your child’s phone, in the games they play before bed.

Why This Matters More Than Ever

The numbers are staggering and cannot be ignored. In just the first six months of 2025, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children received 518,720 reports of online enticement of children — a 56% increase over the same period in 2024. Reports of child sex trafficking jumped ten times higher, and financial sextortion cases rose 70%.

There are an estimated 500,000 online predators active every single day. According to the FBI, over 50% of victims of online sexual exploitation are between the ages of 12 and 15, and approximately 89% of sexual advances directed at children occur in internet chat rooms or through instant messaging.

This is not a distant threat. It is happening right now, in the same spaces where your children chat, play games, and share photos — often while sitting in the next room.

One thing I learned at an incredibly early age was this: we are always a target.

Not sometimes. Not occasionally. Always. And the sooner we understand that the sooner we can learn to protect ourselves.

From the Very Beginning

I was targeted by my mother's boyfriend — "The Actor" — when I could barely speak. I was targeted by men on the street while walking to and from school. It was during one of those walks that a man grabbed and molested me. That is a story for another time, but I want you to know it happened, because it matters to the larger picture I am painting here.

I was targeted by my friends' mothers' boyfriends. I was targeted by my brother's friends. These were not strangers in the shadows. They were people who were supposed to be safe.

Growing Up and Learning to Read the Room

By the time I reached my late teens, I had already lived through enough to develop a certain kind of awareness — a quiet, constant reading of every room I walked into. It did not always protect me, but it made me pay attention.

When I was in my late teens, I was walking through Las Vegas casinos with my mom when two men made it noticeably clear they were following us. You learn to recognize that feeling — the way someone's movement mirrors yours just a little too deliberately.

Then there were the days when a group of people at the Hamburger Hamlet during a work lunch made their interest equally obvious. When I stood up, they stood up. When I sat down, they sat down. I recognized one of the men from an Entertainment Tonight segment — he was the owner of a porn business. They did not approach me directly, but the message was unmistakable. Being watched, being assessed, being treated as something to be acquired — that is its own kind of targeting, even when no one says a word.

The "Approach Me and Die" Look — and Why It Works

When I went on a European vacation tour by myself at forty years old, I was surprised to find that men still targeted me. I did not think I was particularly striking when I was younger, and by forty, I assumed I had left whatever attention I once drew well behind me.

I was wrong.

But by that age, I had also earned something far more useful than youth — I had learned what I call the "approach me and die" look. And it worked.

Here is why: predators, particularly those operating in public spaces, are fundamentally cowardly. They are not looking for a challenge. They are looking for someone who will not fight back, will not scream, will not cause a scene, and will not draw attention. The moment you signal — through your posture, your eyes, your entire presence — that you are none of those things, the calculation changes. You are no longer easy prey. You become a risk. And most predators will not take that risk when there are other, quieter targets available.

This is true on a ferry, in a casino, on a street corner, or in a parking lot. The "approach me and die" look does not make you invisible. But it makes you expensive. And expensive is often enough.

It was on that same European trip, on a ferry to Greece, that three older teenage boys fixated on me with a dead cold stare. That stare said everything. I knew immediately to avert my eyes — not out of fear, but out of strategy. You do not stare back. You do not engage. You make yourself unreadable. Even the friends I had been walking away from at the time noticed their stare and understood exactly what it meant.

When the Workplace Became a Target Zone

When I got into management, I soon discovered that being good at my job also made me a target. If you have read Watch What They Do, you already understand the kind of people I am describing.

It was not until I was around forty years old that I learned what a narcissist was — and eventually learned to identify their patterns. And later still, I came to understand why I had always been in their crosshairs: because I was not like them, and my skills were a threat to them.

I have empathy. And people who do not feel empathy do not like people who do. We are a direct threat to everything they depend on.

Why People Are Targets — And It Is Never Their Fault

So why are some of us targeted more than others? I have thought about this for a long time, and here is what I have come to understand.

Predators — whether they are abusers, narcissists, or simply people who feed on power — do not choose their targets randomly. But their reasons are not always the same.

Some people are targeted simply because they appear vulnerable. Children are the clearest example of this. They are small. They are trusting. They have not yet learned to recognize danger, and they depend on the adults around them to keep them safe. When those adults fail them — or worse, are the danger — a child has almost no defense. Predators know this. They count on it. Easy access and easy silence are what they are looking for, and children provide both without ever choosing to.

Others are targeted as they grow older for a different reason entirely — because they have something a predator cannot stand. And what threatens certain people most is empathy.

People with empathy are present. They pay attention. They notice things. They feel deeply, and because they feel deeply, they also see clearly — and that clarity makes them dangerous to people who depend on confusion, control, and silence to survive.

I did not know the word "narcissist" until I was around forty years old. But once I learned it, everything clicked into place — every workplace sabotage, every relationship that drained me, every person who smiled at my face and worked against me behind my back. They were not random. They were deliberate. I had something they could not manufacture — genuine human connection. And they wanted either to own it, destroy it, or make sure I never used it against them.

This is also true on the larger stage we are all living on right now. The people currently trying to dismantle our rights, our institutions, and our sense of safety are doing exactly what every abuser does — they target the vulnerable first, and then they work their way outward. We can see it clearly in the Executive Orders coming out of the White House. Immigrants and people of color are the opening act. They always are. But make no mistake — anyone who does not conform to a Christian Nationalist or White Nationalist ideology is already in the crosshairs. The empathetic, the outspoken, the ones who notice and refuse to look away — we are all on that list. Abusers do not stop once they have silenced one group. They never do. They just move to the next.

Whether you were targeted because you were small and vulnerable, or because you grew up to be someone who feels and sees too clearly for a predator's comfort — neither was ever your fault. And neither makes you weak. It makes you exactly who they were afraid of.

I thought I was done with Why Am I Here.

I was wrong.

Tuesday evening changed that. After sitting with some deeply honest personal stories — yours and mine — I realized something important was missing. I had set the stage. I had given you the resources. But I had not yet given you the ending.

And right now, so many of you are still inside that story with an abusive person.

So, I am jumping ahead. Because you need to hear how it ended with "The Actor" — not someday, but now.

Two Stories, One Truth

This piece carries two threads, and they are more connected than they might first appear.

The first is personal — the moment my cycle of abuse with The Actor finally broke.

The second is bigger than any one of us — because right now, our freedom is also on the line. When I first came to Substack, I had no intention of sharing my voice here. I started small. I simply encouraged people to speak up for their rights, because politicians on both sides have made it painfully clear that we are not their priority.

That urgency is what led me here. And that urgency is what led me to write Part 2.

So yes — one story is about how one abusive relationship ended. But my deeper hope is that both stories do the same thing: empower you to stand up, speak up, and change the ending — yours, mine, and ours — before it is written for us.

We Are Not Alone in Sounding the Alarm

I am not the only one paying attention.

If you listen to Resistance Historian Tad Stoermer, Professor Poutine, or Historian Heather Cox-Richardson, they are drawing the same chilling comparison — what is unfolding right now looks eerily familiar to Germany in the 1930s.

As I walked you through in Watch What They Do — I was setting the stage to show you how their stage is being set up for all of us. That is what Authoritarians do, isn't it? They build the set. They cast the villains. They run the rehearsals. And by the time the curtain rises, most people do not even realize they are already inside the performance. The immigrants were just the story they told to put militarized criminals on our streets and make people believe it was necessary.

But we are fortunate. We are surrounded by extraordinary truth-tellers: Zev Shalev, Olga Lautman, Dean Blundell, Wajahat Ali – The Left Hook, Steve Schmidt, Nick Paro, Christopher Armitage, W.A. Lawrence, This Will Hold, and Ellie Leonard — just to name a few. I love every single one of them.

We must speak up and stand up now — before they take our power away. Because that is exactly the goal.

How It Ended With The Actor

My abuse story with The Actor lasted approximately sixteen years.

Growing up, I spoke up and spoke out — a lot. It was the only way I stayed sane. But it also made The Actor violent. Speaking up or not being quiet enough had a cost. And for a long time, I paid it.

Then came the day I had finally had enough.

I spoke up to him — in front of someone else. And the moment I did, I moved quickly to my room and shut the door. I knew he would follow.

So, I made a choice.

I laid down on my bed — deliberately, calmly, with intention. When he pushed that door open, I looked at him and said, quietly:

"Touch me, and I will knock you over with my finger."

No rage. No pleading. Just absolute certainty.

Do you know what he did?

He looked at me.

And he turned around. And he quietly shut the door.

He knew. He could see it in me — that I was done, and that I was more than capable of following through. He was weak with cancer by then. But more than that, the dynamic had shifted. The power he had built over sixteen years crumbled in that one still, quiet moment.

That was the last time The Actor physically abused me.

But it was also the moment they kicked me out of the house — because I refused to apologize.

The People Who Caught Me

I was seventeen years old.

I called my friends — Danny, David — and my ex-boyfriend's house to reach my boyfriend and tell him what had happened. And my other mom, my Mexican mother, Esther, did not hesitate for a single second.

"Get the hell out of that house," she said, "and come home."

So that is exactly what I did.

I want you to sit with that for a moment — because the reason I survived is not just because I found my voice. It is because I had people who caught me when I used it. A mother who claimed me. Friends who showed up. A community that held me.

That matters. That is not a small thing. That is everything.

What I Have Not Said Yet — And Why

I do not recall exactly when the sexual abuse stopped.

I pushed that very deep inside. And one of these days — during one of these stories — the dam filled with my tears may finally break.

But when it does, those tears will only ever be for the innocence lost. For the loved ones taken by tragedy, by age, by disease. I will hold every single one of them in my heart forever.

They are another story for another day — including the story of my brother David, who I will always hold dear.

You Do Not Have to Speak to an Abuser to Be Brave

Before I close, I need to say this clearly:

Some of you cannot personally speak up to your abuser. It may not be safe. And that is real.

If that is where you are, please do not measure your courage against my story. My story is one story. Yours is yours — and it deserves its own path to safety and freedom.
